Failover Clustering Improvements in Windows Server 2012 and Its Benefits for SAP NetWeaver High Availability

SAP recently announced its support on Windows Server 2012. As usual, SAP support for Windows Server Failover Clustering (WSFC) is also there. This includes installation (integrated in SWPM – sapinst), upgrades and operational support.

Clustering in Windows Server 2012 brought many new features and improvements, and the particularly interesting one is Continuous Availability File Server. This feature brings ZERO DOWNTIME for SAP SAPMNT file server share and SAP global file systems, and enables continuous non-interrupted access to SAP global files and folders for different SAP processes (like batch, spool, dialog process etc.), during the failover of (A)SCS instance.

Great News From Walldorf – SAP Microsoft Platforms Group Officially Announced Windows Server 2012 General Availability and Support For SAP NetWeaver

SAP Microsoft Platforms group finally released SAP NetWeaver on Windows Server 2012!

Current supported SAP NetWeaver (ABAP, Java, ABAP+Java) releases are:

  • SAP SAP NetWeaver 7.0x based
  • SAP NetWeaver 7.30 and 7.31

Different databases are already supported, for updated list please check SAP Product Availability Matrix (PAM)

Currently supported SAP standalone component is SAP liveCache.

You can run your SAP NetWeaver on Windows 2012 both in physical and virtual environment.

In virtual environment you can run Windows Server 2012 guest OS on these hypervisors:

  • Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V
  • Windows Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V
(due to scalability limitation of  Windows Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V  it is highly recommended to use Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V )
  • VMware vSphere 5.1
  • VMware vSphere 5.0 (min U1, U2)

High Availability with Microsoft Windows Server Failover Cluster is off course fully supported and fully integrated in SAP sapinst installation software!

For more information on SAP NetWeaver HA in physical and virtual environment you can check in this White Paper: SAP NetWeaver High Availability and Business Continuity in Virtual Environments with VMware and Hyper-V on Microsoft Windows

Windows Server 2012 brought huge improvements in compare to Windows Server 2008 R2, in the area of scalability, server virtualization, business continuity, high availability, networking and storage.

Many thanks to SAP Microsoft Platforms group for making this happen, specially to Jason Kafka for driving overall Windows Server 2012 part and Claudia Baur for driving virtualization part.

More information on this topic you can find in following SAP notes:

LVM now supports multiple application servers node scenarios– the initial limitation of one application server has been removed with the new SP04 release!

Staring with SP04,  SAP Landscape Virtualization Management (LVM) is supporting multiple application servers.  For more information, benefits etc., please check here.

New white paper on “SAP NetWeaver High Availability and Business Continuity in Virtual Environments with Microsoft Hyper-V and VMware hypervisors on Microsoft Windows OS” is recently published

My new white paper “SAP NetWeaver High Availability and Business Continuity in Virtual Environments with Microsoft Hyper-V and VMware hypervisors on Microsoft Windows OS” is published and is accesible here:

https://scn.sap.com/docs/DOC-32869

White paper is covering SAP NetWeaver High Availability and Business Continuity in Virtual Environments with Microsoft Hyper-V and VMware hypervisors on Microsoft Windows OS and Windows Failover Cluster Service. It explains how virtualization brings new technologies that can help us minimize the downtime of SAP business critical systems, and achieve even higher availability and business continuity than in the physical environment.

All mentioned things are out of the box supported by SAP! White Paper was reviewed by SAP, Microsoft and VMware specialists.

Although white paper is concentration on SAP NetWeaver on Windows guest OS on Hyper-V and VMware hypervisors, the same principles and ideas could be applied for other combinations of guest OS / Hypervisors.
